D\u00e8s qu\u2019on creuse un peu l\u2019histoire des grandes chansons traditionnelles am\u00e9ricaines on retombe en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral sur une ballade anglaise, \u00e9cossaise ou irlandaise. C\u2019est le cas par exemple pour \u00ab The Streets of Laredo \u00bb (chanson cowboy : Laredo est une ville texane) et \u00ab Saint-James Infirmary \u00bb (blues), qui descendent toutes deux \u2013 par une voie propre \u2013 de \u00ab The Unfortunate Rake \u00bb, une ballade anglaise du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle (dans le cas de \u00ab The Streets of Laredo \u00bb, la m\u00e9lodie est quasi-identique \u00e0 l\u2019original). <\/p>\n

Le m\u00eame sc\u00e9nario vaut pour \u00ab The House of the Rising Sun \u00bb, et il y a bien s\u00fbr une certaine ironie dans le fait que ce soient des Anglais, le groupe The Animals, qui en 1964 rendirent \u00e0 nouveau cette chanson c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u2013 m\u00eame s\u2019ils imitaient alors la mani\u00e8re dont Bob Dylan chantait la chanson (dans son premier album : \u00ab Bob Dylan \u00bb \u20131962), qui copiait lui-m\u00eame le style de Dave van Ronk (la chose est tr\u00e8s bien expliqu\u00e9e dans No Direction Home<\/b>, le documentaire que Martin Scorsese consacra en 2005 \u00e0 Bob Dylan). <\/p>\n
