The Old Testament: Creation<\/b>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-141899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pauljorion.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/DALL\u00b7E-2024-10-24-18.45.54-An-anime-style-depiction-of-the-biblical-creation-of-humanity-from-Genesis.-A-divine-glowing-figure-hovers-in-the-sky-bathed-in-ethereal-light-form.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1792\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Illustration by DALL\u00b7E (+Anim\u00e9)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>The Old Testament: Creation<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For almost two millennia the dominant view of humankind in the West was grounded in the biblical account: Adam and Eve being made in the likeness of God, while nature was defined by God as being put specifically at the service of humankind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Bible states: &#8220;Then God said,\u00a0&#8216;Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;\u00a0let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over\u00a0all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.&#8217;\u00a0So God created man\u00a0in His\u00a0own\u00a0image; in the image of God He created him;\u00a0male and female He created them.\u00a0Then God blessed them, and God said to them,\u00a0&#8216;Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and\u00a0subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that\u00a0moves on the earth'&#8221; (<i>Genesis<\/i> I 26-28).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Man had been assigned a privileged status by God while a divine quality, the <i>spirit<\/i>, permeates Man in contrast to all other creatures. One outcome of the assignment of dominion over nature was predictable when nature was defined as not to be honoured by humans but in subservience to them: that they might devastate it in an exploitative manner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The biblical account was expressing a ruthlessly anthropocentric view, with humankind positioned above the rest of nature.
